Phil Powell, one of many Democratic candidates disappointed with the glitches in the filing process earlier this year, has unofficially managed to gather enough petition signatures, more than 1,200, to be an Independent candidate on the November ballot as a contender for the South Carolina District 53 House of Representatives seat.

His place of the ballot will not be official until the petition signatures have been verified by the South Carolina State Elections Committee.

“We still need to finish the verification process and take the forms to Columbia before July 16,” said Powell. “My wife of 39 years has been the true hero behind this effort. Sally has spent countless hours verifying forms and coordinating our volunteer base.”

Powell credits his grassroots approach of more than 40 volunteers, circulating 120 petition sheets, for his apparent success in being placed on the ballot.
