The Jazzin in July benefit held at the Theater on the Green July 14 for Mercy in Me Free Medical Clinic “met my expectations and more,” said Wendy Woods, one the coordinators for the event. “I enjoyed the spirit of the band and people that came to give to a worthy cause.”

A New Creation, a local group of jazz musicians and vocalists, performed a unique blend of jazz and gospel for the event. Members of the band include Dennis Hardison, saxophone; vocalists Michell White and Amy Ponds; C. J. Muldrow, piano; DeRay Kirby, drums; and Montrelle Covington, bass guitar.

Hardison told the audience he loved sharing his music, his God given talent, with people. And for the last song of the evening he asked the house lights to be raised so he could see the smiles of the faces in the audience as he performed.

“This is the first time I’ve ever played in this theater,” said Hardison. “But it won’t be my last. I’m coming back!”

Guests enjoyed an outdoor reception following the performance. One of the guests, Rev. Lee Woods, said, “It was good from start to finish.”
