Margaret Alice Williamson Gibson passed away Monday, July 23, 2012.

A memorial service will be held in the auditorium of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, with the service conducted by the Rev. Dr. Craig Ford. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.

Peggy was born on Feb. 13, 1928, to William Thomas and Margaret Scott Williamson, both who precede her in death, as did a brother, William Thomas Williamson Jr.

She attended Wylie School and R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, and graduated with a B.A. from the Women’s College in Greensboro, N.C. She moved to Arlington, Va., and worked at the Pentagon, later moving back to Winston-Salem to work at radio station WSJS. She married Robert L. Gibson on June 15, 1951, and moved with him through medical training in Richmond, Va., Augusta, Ga., and Gainesville, Fla. They settled in Ocala, Fla., in 1955, where they lived until moving back to her beloved Winston-Salem in 1971.

Peggy was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church; the Medical Alliance of the Piedmont; Old Town Bridge Club; Flower Lore Garden Club; and Woman’s Reading Club. Peggy was a lovely, wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother with a warm compassionate heart, a tender spirit, and always a gracious smile. She fought a long hard battle with cancer which she bore with a remarkably brave and tenacious spirit. All of her family and many friends are grieved by her passing, but trust they will see her again in a heavenly setting that has no end.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Nowlan Fields and her husband, Dr. Richard Fields of Pleasant Garden, N.C.; and a brother, Daniel Scott Williamson and wife Emily of Advance, N.C.

Other survivors are her husband of 61 years, Dr. Robert L. Gibson of Winston-Salem; children, Dr. Anne Catherine Gibson Schwartz and husband Richard Lee Schwartz of McLean, Va., Rev. Dr. Thomas Lester Gibson and wife Robin of Greensboro, N.C., Patricia Lynn Johnston and husband Dr. John J. Johnston of Gainesville, Fla., and Margaret Gay Slough of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren Margaret Jessica Schwartz and Richard Lee Schwartz III of McLean, Va., Elizabeth Gibson Archibald and husband Ryan Archibald of Winder, Ga., Samuel Thomas Gibson of Concord, N.C., Laurie Christen Gibson of Greensboro, N.C., Katherine Victoria Johnston and Mary Margaret Johnston of Gainesville, Fla, and Daniel Calvin Johnston and wife Emily of Decatur, Ga.; Asher Thomas Archibald of Winder, Ga. is the sole great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Hospice Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.
