CHAPELL HILL, N.C.— Christopher Lee Bennett, a Chesterfield native (class of 2005) and the son of Bobby and Sandra Bennett, has accepted an offer at The University of North Carolina School of Medicine to further his studies and pursue a doctorate in medicine.
Bennett received his undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry with dual honors from Winthrop University in Rock Hill and his graduate research degree in Genetics and Genomics from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C.
At both Winthrop and Duke, he was actively involved in basic and clinical sciences research that focused on rare human genetic disease — an area he plans to continue in, and beyond, his medical training. His undergraduate work at Winthrop earned him a NIH Research Fellowship and distinction as both a Founder and Jones Scholar. His graduate research at Duke, with the Center for Human Disease Modeling and later with the Department of Molecular Genetics, secured a NIH Graduate Training Grant, resulted in multiple publications, and earned him a Research Award from the International Mammalian Genome Society last summer.
Following graduation from Duke, but prior to medical school, Bennett has continued his work in rare disease as a clinical geneticist with the NC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The focus of his research group is to better understand the cellular and biochemical mechanisms of infection for viral-associated cancers.
