In an effort to help brighten the lives of children who have recently lost a loved one, Hospice of Chesterfield County held its fourteenth annual bereavement camp, Camp Sunshine, on Aug. 4.

Children ages 5-12 attended the one-day camp held at the Chesterfield YMCA.

The camp was designed to help children express their grief through a variety of activities, including face painting and swimming. They gave tribute to their loved ones through art, enjoyed relaxation techniques and other therapeutic play activities led by play therapist, Dawn White. The children also learned to cope with their grief in a constructive manner.

“What a great day at camp — play therapy with Dawn White, the Hospice staff offering comfort and compassion to the children and closing with face painting by Rosalind Johnson,” said Hospice Bereavement Coordinator Mark Phillips. “The day was packed with caring for our children. Thank you for allowing us to serve you through Camp Sunshine.”

Camp Sunshine was made possible through the generosity of Shiloh United Methodist Church VBS, Tee-rific Screen Printing and individual donors. Hospice staff and volunteers assisted with the various activities during the camp.

While Hospice provides bereavement care to the families of Hospice patients for one year after the patient’s death, Camp Sunshine was offered to all children who had experienced the recent death of a relative or a loved one. Hospice also provides quarterly bereavement support meetings that are available to the public.

Hospice of Chesterfield County is a program of care and supportive services designed to help terminally ill persons live as comfortably and as fully as possible during the last stage of their life. The Hospice organization focuses on the maximum comfort and care of the terminally ill and provides support through an interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, social workers, clergy and volunteers. They too help the patient and the family prepare for and adjust to the inevitable final stage of life.
