During the two exhilarating weeks of battling with foxes — Marion and Hartsville — the Braves experienced the sweetness of victory and the bitterness of defeat. In retrospect, the joy from whipping the limping Swamp Foxes of Marion was short-lived because of the 34-7 setback from the hands of the Red Foxes of Hartsville this past Friday night.
As the Braves traveled to Kelly Town Stadium, everyone was aware of the high octane offense of the Red Foxes and preparations had been made to slow the Red Foxes’ down. In addition, the Red Foxes entered the game with an undefeated record and hoped to stay that way before their regional contest with the Marlboro County Bull Dogs. Mission accomplished. The game matched the depth and power of the Red Foxes against the determined, but once again, out-manned force of the Braves.
To the surprise of the Red Fox fans, the Braves were able to stay within striking distance of the Red Foxes by leading in time of possession and only trailing by the score of 13-0 at the end of the first half. However, the Red Foxes turned up the heat in the second half and controlled the time of possession. This allowed the Red Foxes to put up 21 more points in the lopsided victory. The Braves were able to avoid the goose egg by scoring a touch down with two minutes and thirteen seconds left in the third quarter of play.
The Red Foxes overpowered the aching Braves in the second half of action, and the Braves were cramping and limping off the field. A number of Braves played on offense and defense and this caused the Braves to wear down quicker. The Red Foxes benefited from its array of talent and being able to have two platoons. Yes, the Braves were overpowered and handily beaten by a superior team. Nevertheless, these are the growing pains which could ultimately propel the Braves into a successful run in the playoffs.
The Braves next game is Friday at home, 7:30 p.m., with Fairfield Central.
