Three Faith Christian Academy students were the winners of the local Cheraw 2011-2012 American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Old Cheraw Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. This year students wrote on the subject, “Young America Takes a Stand: The War of 1812.” Winners read their essays to the members of the chapter on Sept. 17 in the Ladies Parlor, First Presbyterian Church.

Sixth grader Jon Matheson Alexander took the award for his essay titled “America’s General Winfield Scott.” General Scott, known affectionately as “Old Fuss and Feathers” by his men, was born in Petersburg, Va., in 1786 and died in West Point, N.Y., in 1866. He fought in five American wars including the War of 1812 and greatly influenced the U.S. Army.

R. J. Yow, seventh grade contest winner, read his essay titled “Don’t Give Up the Ship,” which told of the efforts of American naval officer James Lawrence, who commanded the USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812. Commander Lawrence is famous for those words.

Winner of the 8th grade contest, Ashley Teal, entertained the chapter members with her essay titled “Lucy Brewer’s Legendary Adventures.” Lucy Brewer, considered by some to be the first woman marine, had various exploits. She supposedly disguised herself as a man and served on the USS Constitution during the War of 1812.

Contest winners and their family members enjoyed refreshments served by DAR hostesses before the reading of the winning essays.
