In recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Pee Dee Coalition Chesterfield Satellite Center will be holding its first annual Walk & Wag on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. until noon, in downtown Chesterfield. The event, which is being co-sponsored by the Chesterfield County Animal Services, will be held rain or shine.

Domestic violence affects pets as well as humans, said Lisa Baker, a volunteer for the Pee Dee Coalition. Many victims of domestic violence will deny themselves freedom from the abusive situation, she said, because they don’t want to leave their pets behind. Pets are also emotionally and physically affected by domestic violence, said Baker, a Victim Advocate.

The walk, down Main Street and through Craig Park, will honor victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

There will be a cutest pet contest and a best costume competition for the pets. Animals will be categorized according to size. Registration for the contests begins at 10 a.m. at the Courthouse on Main Street. A $10 donation is required for participation.

Attendees are asked to bring donations of pet food for Animal Services. “The large number of domestic animals served by the county shelter sorely taxes its budget, and any assistance is greatly appreciated,” said Baker.

Pee Dee Coalition T-shirts will be available for purchase and information tables sponsored by local animal welfare organizations, such as Where Hope Lives Humane Society, will be part of the event as well.

All proceeds will benefit Pee Dee Coalition services in Chesterfield County. The Pee Dee Coalition is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to the reduction of sexual assault, family violence and child abuse; and to the needs of its victims. The Coalition receives funding from United Way of Chesterfield County.
