Belinda Gale Rivers, 43, an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for Sandhills Ambulance Service in Cheraw, was killed Tuesday morning in a collision near Carolinas Medical Center Monroe on U.S. Highway 74 in Monroe, N.C., according to Michael B. Thomas of the Monroe City Police Department. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Thomas, the accident occurred around 11 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 74 and Venus Street. A tractor trailer truck driven by Wallace Kenneth Murphy Jr. of Madison, N.C., traveling westbound on U.S. 74 collided with the ambulance. The ambulance was driven by EMT Jonathan Cory Brown of Cheraw, and was traveling on Venus Street crossing U.S. 74 at the time. There was no patient on board.
Brown was transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte for his injuries. He is listed in stable condition, said Thomas. The truck driver suffered no injuries.
Monroe Police Chief Debra Duncan said the investigation is continuing as witnesses are still being questioned. There have been no charges filed at this time. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Unit is assisting the Monroe Traffic Unit with the investigation.
