For years, Cheraw Mayor Andy Ingram, Cheraw Town Council and many concerned citizens, have been asking postal workers and practically every politician who would listen, to put in a good word for keeping Cheraw’s downtown postal facility alive. And that has worked — twice. But now, they’re asking you, area residents, to complete a survey that may be the last measure of difference in the final decision.

That survey, said Ingram, “is vital for the future of our post office.”

Residents are asked to look for the survey in this week’s mail, complete and return it promptly. The survey contains 14 questions concerning service, accessibility and convenience. There will be no postage fee to return the survey. Residents may simply place the completed survey in their mailbox for the carrier, or return it to the Cheraw Post Office on Market Street by Friday, Oct. 12.

“I am asking every resident in the 29520 zip to please complete this survey,” said Ingram. “The downtown post office, which has been at the corner of Market and Third streets for almost 80 years, may close if the United States Postal Service does not hear from its local customers.”

The U.S. Postal Service agreed to the mayor’s request to conduct the survey during a public forum held at the Cheraw Community Center in August of this year.

“I am encouraging all residents to answer the survey in a way which clearly indicates the downtown facility should remain open,” said Ingram.

RUSH YOUR COMPLETED SURVEY. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE DOING BUSINESS WITH OUR POST OFFICE TO HAVE INPUT INTO WHAT IS GOING ON.

For the current Market Street location, many residents and businesses will be hampered by the closing of the old Post Office. For the relocation location, many people will find it too far out of town to get to for the postal services they render. In any case, there are pros and cons to the decision and all of us will have to deal with it one way or another.
