Two residents from Chesterfield County’s District 9 are hoping to be elected to the late Council Porter’s seat on the Chesterfield County School Board. The special election for this seat, a week after the general election this fall, will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13, “for Chesterfield County District 9 voters only,” said Ernestine Shray of the Chesterfield County Voter’s Registration Office.
Each of the candidates, Wayne Chapman and Johnnie F. McLendon, have earned doctoral degrees in their respective fields.
Chapman, a life-long resident of Chesterfield County, holds a doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership from Argosy University. He earned his Master’s of Business Management from Troy University, and his bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from Coker College. He completed an associate degree in business administration at Northeastern Technical College and is a graduate of Chesterfield High School.
Chapman has served in the South Carolina National Guard of Hartsville, S.C., for the past 30 years. He is currently employed with Circle Park Behavioral Center in Florence. He and his wife, Beatrice, have three daughters, Latoya Chapman-Johnson, Ashley Chapman and Tiffany Chapman.
McLendon earned his Doctorate of Divinity from Grace Bible College in Newton, N.C. He holds a Master of Divinity and a bachelor’s degree in theology from Gospel School of the Bible College in Mineral Spring, N.C. McLendon received an associate degree in theology from the Christian Bible College and Seminary School in Ventura, Calif. He also holds associate credits from Cameron University, University of Maryland, City College of Chicago, and Pikes Peak University.
McLendon retired as First Sergeant from the United States Army in 1997 and has been pastor of the Fisher Hill Community Baptist Church for the past 15 years. He currently serves on the Cheraw Area Task Force Team, and has served on the School Improvement Council for Cheraw Primary, Cheraw Intermediate and Long Middle. McLendon has served the community as president of the Cheraw NAACP Branch, president of Fisher Hill Bible College, vice president of Cheraw Ministerial Alliance, Chaplain for both Chesterfield General Hospital and the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.
McLendon resigned his commission with the Chesterfield County Voter Registration office so that he could run for this office. Others boards he has served include the Chesterfield County Drug Court, Cheraw Housing Authority, Chesterfield General Hospital, Mercy in Me Free Medical Clinic and Habitat for Humanity. He is currently employed as a Clinical Chaplain for Agape Hospice.
Porter, who served as the board representative in District 9 for nearly two decades, died this summer at the age of 82.
