The Four Season Garden Club has chosen the home of Kelly Bollman, at 202 Popular Street, for the Yard of the Month for October. Kelly and her two children have only been in the house for a few months and were thankful that it came already landscaped. The landscape plan has a good choice of shrubs that are attractive year round and yet very low maintenance. The shrubbery beds feature gracious curving edges that enhance the circular drive in the front of the house. The mulch has a natural reddish cast to it which complements the brick house and the green shrubs nicely. Kelly has found that any time the mulch starts to look a little dull, all she needs to do is turn it a bit with a rake, and new fresh mulch appears.
There is a mature maple near the front door that enhances the house. Off to the sides are mature magnolias. Underneath the maple, there are several shrubs of the shade loving Acuba. In the shade of a magnolia, she has several azaleas.
A Holly ‘Carissa’ accents the front curves of the beds is a holly that stays low and compact and very dressy for a holly. Several camellias and sasanquas are in the middle of the beds which will give her fall and early spring blooms. Also, in the middle area is a hybrid ligustrum. Back towards the house, where they wanted taller shrubs to accent the architecture, there are 6 mature Hollies ‘Nellie Stevens’. Out on the outer edges of the lot where they need an accent color, they have Cypress ‘Crippsii’ with yellow graceful growing tips. Another accent shrub of interest is Cypress ‘Filifera’ with has green tips that are very dainty and elegant and perfect for accenting an arrangement for the house.
Kelly Bollman is always very busy working full-time, raising two children and squeezing in her art interests. She is very thankful that no matter how busy she is, she can drive up to a low-maintenance attractive home.
