Republican candidate Tom Rice will be the first to hold the office of South Carolina’s newly earned 7th Congressional seat in Washington, D.C.

The unofficial vote totals from Tuesday’s General Election show Rice captured the congressional post with 131,309 votes, or about 55 percent, over his Democratic opponent Gloria Bromell Tinubu who received 107,396 votes throughout the large district, or about 45 percent of all ballots cast in the race.

Rice won over voters in Chesterfield County earning 8,464 votes, or 52.17 percent, compared with Tinubu who received 7,235 votes.

Late Tuesday evening, Tinubu said she would not concede the race to Rice, “until all the votes have been counted.”

Tinubu told reporters she will not give up until she is certain all of her votes, from both the Democratic and the Working Families Party, had been officially counted. About an hour later, she did concede.

This new office gives South Carolina an additional voice in the United States House of Representatives, thanks to gains in the state’s population that were documented by the 2010 U.S. Census Report. This new district links Chesterfield County with the northeastern portion of the state, including much of the coast.

The counties Rice will represent in Washington include Chesterfield, Marlboro, Darlington, Florence, Dillon, Marion, Horry and Georgetown.

During his acceptance speech Tuesday evening, Rice said, “The hard work is just getting ready to start.”
