Chesterfield County School District’s latest report card shows graduation rates have improved, even though the overall grade remains “Average” and the “Closing the Achievement Gap” is rated as “Good.”
According to Ken Buck, public information officer for the school district, two high schools in the county, Chesterfield and McBee, have placed themselves in the top 18 percent of the state’s graduation rate.
“McBee High’s graduation rate of 85.14 percent earned the school a ranking of 37, out of 227 high schools in the state,” said Buck. “Chesterfield High’s 84.67 percent gave them a ranking of 39th.” The on-time graduation rate for the entire district with this report is 78.4 percent.
“Chesterfield County’s graduation rate as a district was also 2.2 percent better than similar districts,” said Buck. “When compared to other districts deemed similar to Chesterfield County, the district out performed on the PASS reading and math tests on percentage of students who met or exceeded a passing score.”
Chesterfield County School District Superintendent Harrison Goodwin said he was not surprised by the results. “Those schools’ performance is a reflection of some very hard work,” he said.
“But I am disappointed,” said Harrison, “that we don’t measure up to the level of some of the districts in our geographic area. We have some challenges we need to meet.”
By comparison, in years past, this is the second year in a row the county has received an Absolute Rating of “Average.” In 2010, that rating was “Below Average” and the growth rate was “At-Risk.” The HSAP Passage rate for Spring 2012 is 90.4 percent and End of Course Test Passage rate for the district stands at 68.8 percent.
