As many of you know, congressional redistricting happens every 10 years. After the census is conducted, Congress looks at which areas have grown or declined in population and representation across the country is reassessed. Some states lose seats in Congress, some gain, and some keep their current representation.
This year, South Carolina gained a seat during this process. Therefore, the district lines within the state were revised and on January 3, 2013, the new district lines take effect. I’d like to take this opportunity to briefly explain how this will affect you. If you live in Chesterfield, Marlboro, Dillon, Florence, or Darlington counties, your new Representative will be Tom Rice. For those of you that live in Kershaw, Lee, Lancaster, York, Cherokee, Fairfield, and Chester counties, I will continue to be your Congressman. I will also begin representing folks in Union County, as well as a small eastern portion of Spartanburg county. I will also represent the majority of Sumter County instead of the small portion I served in the past. Lastly, I will represent only the eastern half of Newberry County as Congressman Jeff Duncan will be representing the other half.
To those of you I will no longer be representing, I thank you for the privilege of serving you the past two years. I am confident Representative-elect Tom Rice and Representative Jeff Duncan will take excellent care of you. And to those of you in Union, Spartanburg, and Sumter counties, I look forward to meeting and working with many of you in the coming months and years.
