Crown Discount Tobacco and Convenience Store on the corner of Highway 9 and Moffat Drive has been robbed at gunpoint for the second time in less than six months. According to Detective John James with the Cheraw Police Department, the clerk was not injured, but was instructed at gunpoint around 3 a.m. Nov. 30 to hand over all the money through the overnight window.
James said the clerk told officers a skinny, white man of medium height, dark curly hair and green eyes had come to the window at approximately 3 a.m. and asked for two cartons of cigarettes. When she returned to the window with the cigarettes, a tall black man, whose face was covered from chin to nose, “stuck a gun in her face and said put all the money in the bag.”
Once the clerk had done as the robber instructed, she was “ordered to the floor,” James said, “and that was the last she saw of them.”
The black male suspect is also described as wearing a red hoodie and having large, bulging eyes, police said. It is also believed that the suspects may have been driving a “small burgundy vehicle with dark tinted windows,” said James.
The same store was robbed during the wee hours of the morning in late August. In that incident, the robbers entered the store and held the clerk, along with three customers at gunpoint. Those suspects were described as three black males, dressed mostly in black, police said. One was carrying a sawed off shotgun.
While both incidents are still under investigation, and officers do not think they are connected, a cash reward is now being offered by the Cheraw Police Department, said James, “for any information leading to the arrests of suspects in either robbery.” Anyone with knowledge of these crimes should contact the Cheraw Police Department at 843-537-7868.
