Cheraw’s former mayor, C.H. McBride, died Christmas Day. Most people called him “Mr. C.H.” His given name was Charles Hyman McBride. He was 91.

McBride was elected to town council in 1986, but gave up that position to serve as Cheraw’s mayor from 1988 until 1993. According to Cheraw’s current mayor, Andy Ingram, McBride’s administration was known for being conservative, especially regarding finances.

Ingram also said McBride had been a great personal source of knowledge and advice during his political career.

Born in Cheraw, McBride was married to the late Sara Warden McBride. He was a World War II Marine from 1942 until 1946, and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. A year later, he started McBride’s Laundry and Dry Cleaners business which he operated until 1981.

He was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W., First Baptist Church and the Cheraw Arts Commission. McBride is survived by his daughter-in-law, Julia Conn McBride of Myrtle Beach, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother, James McBride, and a son, Charles H. McBride Jr.
