COLUMBIA, S.C. — April Palmer of Newberry became the newest officer and member of the S.C. State Guard this past Saturday, Jan. 5, during a ceremony at the State Guard’s historic Olympia Armory in Columbia.

Palmer was sworn in as a First Lieutenant by Brigadier General Richard Eckstrom, commander of the S.C. State Guard.

Palmer, who holds a master’s degree in higher education from Clemson University and currently serves as the Assistant Dean of Students at Newberry College, will be assigned as the Public Affairs Specialist in the State Guard’s Information Office.

The S.C. State Guard traces its lineage back to the early state militia of 1670 and is today an all volunteer state defense force component of the S. C. Military Department, which also includes the S. C. Army National Guard, the S. C. Air National Guard, the S. C. Emergency Management Division, and other elements.

For more information on how to become a member of the S.C. State Guard, contact Lt. Keith Pounds at 352-949-6003.
