South Carolina Agribiz & Farm Expo is this week

FLORENCE — The S.C. Agribiz & Farm Expo is being held Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 16-18, at the SMG-managed Florence Civic Center.

The event is put on by Arbor One, Duke Energy, SC Farm Bureau, Clemson University, AgSouth, John Deere, SC Department of Agriculture, and SC National Heritage Corridor.

There are more than 100-plus exhibitors at this event. Just to name a few, a variety of exhibitors in attendance are from makers of tractors, and all terrain vehicles, seed companies, plus much more.

There are numerous educational seminars scheduled over the three-day event. Some of the seminars include: Update on the 2013 Farm Bill, Innovations in Precision Agriculture, Control of the Kudzu Bug in Soybeans, Wild Hog Biology-Status and Management, and many more.

This is an opportunity for agribusiness men and women to network and discuss the issues of today, what was learned from problems of the past, and planting innovative seeds of the future.

The “Taste of SC Agribiz” reception will highlight the Honorable Ed Young, who is the first recipient of the “SC Heritage Farmer of the Year Award.” The reception is sponsored by AgSouth and will be Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost of admission to the Taste is $25.

The Commissioner’s Breakfast is Friday, from 7 to 8:15 a.m. This event will highlight an opportunity to hear from South Carolina’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Hugh Weathers, speaking on the current state and future of agriculture in our state. The Commissioner’s Breakfast will be hosted by the Advocates of Agriculture and sponsored by Clemson University and Piedmont Tech. A ticket to the Commissioners Breakfast is $25. All the proceeds will go to support the South Carolina Commissioner’s School for Agriculture.

The Economic Development Symposium is Friday, from 9 to 11 a.m. Hear the most up to date topics as it pertains to Agribusiness from leading professionals like Commissioner Hugh Weathers, Department of Commerce; Ted Campbell, Palmetto Agribusiness Council President; Jack Shuler and Jody Martin with Palmetto Consulting Solutions. The Keynote speaker will be Martin Swink with McCall Farms. The cost for the Economic Development Symposium is $ 25.

The SC Agribiz & Farm Expo Hours are: Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 8 a.m to 5 p.m., Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Cost of Admission is $ 5.
