Members of the Pageland community, along with members of the Chesterfield County School Board, gathered at Central High School last Monday to remember and honor Linda Blackwell, a former school board member who passed away in 2012. The school’s library is now called the Linda B. Blackwell Media Center.

Members of Central High School’s JROTC Cadet Program escorted guests from the parking lot to the ceremony. The dedication ceremony, followed by a reception, was held in the school’s commons area.

“Linda touched the lives of many,” said Lavilla Evans, a family member. “She never looked down on anyone unless she was trying to pick them up.”

The plaque to be hung in the media center was unveiled Monday evening. It reads: “The media center of Central High School is dedicated to the memory of Linda B. Blackwell for her service and devotion to the Chesterfield County School District. She served as a trustee from 1993-1996 and again from 2006-2009. She was a 1967 graduate of Pageland High School. In addition to her service as a trustee, she served the community through many different church and civic organizations.”

Gerald Mickey Baker, Blackwell’s brother, said he was “much obliged” for the honor the community and the school board had given his sister.

William Watson, who served on the board with Blackwell, said, “I used to sit next to her at the board meetings. I admired the way she always thought for herself.”
