The Greater Cheraw Chamber of Commerce held its first legislative breakfast Monday morning at The River’s Edge on Market Street, inviting current state representatives to listen to what Chamber members hope they will help achieve for our citizens.
South Carolina Sen. Vincent Sheheen, Rep. Ted Vick of Chesterfield County, and Rep. Elizabeth Munnerlyn were guests speakers for the event. Each representative was given a clear outline of the type agenda Cheraw’s leaders hope to see.
According to Phil Powell, The Chamber endorses the following and recommends support by the local delegation to the South Carolina General Assembly during the 2013 Session: For infrastructure, the Chamber advocates for improving the roads and bridges in, and leading to, Chesterfield County; completing the improvement of SC Highway 9 so that all of the section in Chesterfield County has four lanes; improving U.S. Highways 1 and 52, to handle the increased traffic required by business and industry growth; an increase in funding support for local highway maintenance need.
For education and workforce development, the Chamber advocates for continued support for Lottery Tuition Assistance for college students attending the South Carolina Technical College; creating a standard manufacturing certificate to educate and prepare a portion of the workforce for entry-level positions in manufacturing; continuing support for the Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA; expansion of Career and Technology offerings in K-12 schools; supporting early childhood education, especially efforts to help every child to be literate before reaching fourth grade; and supporting the Work Ready Communities initiative.
For economic development and natural resources, the Chamber advocates for continuing funding for readySC to ensure that companies considering locating or expanding in the state have access to a skilled workforce; improving facilities and further development of parks and recreation assets to include Cheraw State Park and H. Cooper Black; supporting local action to remove abandoned/dilapidated structures and highway litter control; and supporting local and state initiatives to increase rural tourism, eco-tourism and agro-tourism.
