The Knights of Columbus, State of South Carolina, Free Throw Shooting Championship was held this past Saturday in Columbia, S.C. Three competitors from Cheraw won the local and district rounds to qualify for a trip to the State Finals. Those winners were Jonathan Gordon, 10 year-old division; Jajavy Toney, 11 year-old division, and Xabian Johnson, 13 year-old division.
Jajavy Toney, last year’s winner in the 10 year-old division, finished 3rd in the state in this year’s 11 year-old final. Xabian Johnson also finished 3rd in this year’s 13 year-old division. Jonathan Gordon finished tied for first place in the 10 year-old division and had to compete in a head-to-head “shoot off” playoff to determine the champion. The competitor from Georgetown only connected on 2 of his 5 shots in the championship and Jonathan Gordon nailed 4 of his 5 shots to walk away as the state champion.
The Knights of Columbus Director stated, “This year’s competition has been the most competitive that we have had in some years.” On the win, Gordon said, “ My dad is always telling me not to wear my emotions on my sleeves and I could tell that the other kid was struggling at the line after he missed his first two shots. Dad pressures me to perform under pressure or in the clutch. So, I did everything he had taught me. I believed I would make my shots and smiled after I made them.”
