Amid the bustle of Friday afternoon school traffic, coupled with additional traffic at the temporary carnival in town last Friday, was an accident involving a motorcyclist and a utility trailer truck that resulted in the death of the motorcyclist.

Gary Freeman, 59, was turning on to West Greene Street, toward Long Middle School, from the small road that runs behind the Exxon and over to Carolina Bank, when he collided with the utility trailer, said Cheraw Police Department Lt. Keith Thomas. Flemming Battle, of Marion, S.C., was driving the truck as it traveled down West Greene Street toward Highway 9.

“Rescue workers started CPR on the scene,” said Keith. However, Freeman was transported to Chesterfield General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation, said Keith. The driver of the truck was not injured.
