Cheraw Town Council members agreed Tuesday evening to spend an extra $5,000 for the 2013 Summer Concert Series, allowing Jay Bennett, director of the Cheraw Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, to bring in bands like The Catalinas and The Fantastic Shakers.

Each of these two concerts will cater to adult audiences, said Bennett, and will “offer us an opportunity to re-coup some of the money spent, as these will be ticketed events.”

Council also approved Bennett’s request to have the gym floor at the Cheraw Community Center refinished. Bennett said the floor had been buffed a couple of times recently, but had not been completely and properly refinished in 15 years. Council gave Bennett permission to accept the lowest bid on the job.

Councilman Randy Butler reported the wishes of the Public Safety Committee concerning the possible change in fire districts for the neighborhoods of Deerfield and County Club Acres from Cash Rural Fire Department to the Cheraw Fire Department. “We would like to have a workshop meeting,” said Butler, to include all members of both Cheraw Town Council and Chesterfield County Council.

Council agreed, but has not yet arranged that meeting time.

The second reading of an ordinance authorizing the sale of real property at 1550 West Market Street was unanimously approved Tuesday. And first readings of two rezoning ordinances also passed unanimously. One is a parcel of land at 193-201 Highway 1 South, the other is at 819 Market Street. Both have been changed from Neighborhood Commercial (NC) to General Commercial (GC).

The next regularly scheduled meeting of Cheraw Town Council will be held at Cheraw Town Hall at 5:30 p.m. April 9. However, most Tuesday evenings, at the same time, Cheraw Mayor Andy Ingram holds briefing meetings, which also are open to the public.
