CHERAW — During last week’s Town Council briefing, the possibility of acquiring new sidewalks in several areas of Cheraw was discussed.
The Town Council is still searching for possible grant sources that could stem from the Federal Stimulus package. At present, according to council, there are approximately 11 areas of sidewalks in Cheraw that need attention. The following list, which specifies areas that may need improvements, was sent to SCDOT for consideration:
ACL Avenue from MLK Drive to John Motley Dr.;
Church St. from Christian Street to Marion Street;
Church Street from Levi Byrd Park to Riverside Park Walking Trail;
High Street between Kershaw Street and West Greene Street
Huger Street between Kershaw Street and West Greene Street;
Inglis Road from West Market Street to Dizzy Gillespie / Cool Breeze Housing Communities;
Jersey Street between Kershaw Street and Market Street;
Kershaw Street from Jersey Street to S.C. 9;
Marion Street from Church Street to Street and on to Kershaw Street;
Second Street between Powe Street and third Street;
l Third Street between North Street and Second Street.
Council members also toured Fitness World of Cheraw and Cheraw Fitness Center to help them determine which one they may want to utilize for town employees.
Cheraw Mayor Scott Hunter said the town wishes to purchase the memberships for their town employees because it is one way to keep employee health costs and workman compensation down.
“If people see the amount of money the town is spending on health insurance and on workman compensation, they’ll understand why we’re willing to make this investment,” said Hunter. “We want our employees to be healthy and stay healthy.”
According to Hunter, around $600,000 of the town’s $8 million budget is earmarked for health insurance and workman compensation based on past claims.
The Town of Cheraw is making an application for Cheraw to be designated as a “Preserve America” community. According to council, the program is targeted to enhance efforts for historic preservation within local communities. It can also provide some possibilities for various grants for the town.
