CHERAW – The woman suspected of making a false report to authorities last week that resulted in the lockdown of three schools has been charged and released on bond.

Sabrina Self, 24, has been charged with unlawful knowingly filing a false police report. She has been released on $2,000 personal bond. She has been ordered to undergo a mental evaluation as well.

On the morning of March 31, Self telephoned law enforcement that an armed man had entered Hopes Treasures and had stolen an unspecified amount jewelry. Immediately after receiving the call, the Cheraw Police Department, the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement responded and set up a search perimeter within the entire area of Cheraw. Three schools – Cheraw High School, Cheraw Intermediate School and Long Middle School — were placed in lockdown mode.

An hour after the search for a suspect began, Self admitted to authorities that she had made up the entire story.

“We called off the search because the woman admitted to us that she made it all up,” said Sheriff Sam Parker. “She had thrown some jewelry in a bag into a ditch in front of the business. It may have been valued around $100. It was just a made up story. There was no real robbery or was there ever a suspect.

Parker said the search had cost the county at least $6,000.

If convicted, Self could face a five-year prison sentence.
