CHERAW - The Robert Smalls Family Learning Center located at 316 Front St., is recognizing September as National Literacy month. Director of Chesterfield County Adult Education/Family Literacy,Freida Ellerbe, said that the center is raising literacy awareness throughout September through its services and programs. "Last year, we received a Vista grant, which opened a door for us be able to go out into the community and recruit volunteers to help those who do not know how to read, or have difficulty with his or her reading," said Ellerbe. Ellerbe added that the center's literacy motto is "Each one, Teach one", and that the center's numerous services are provided to those who want to learn. "Learning, improving, teaching, educating, respect, advocating and counseling, and the word "you", make up the word "Literacy," Ellerbe said. "Anyone who needs to acquire his or her GED or wants to improve his or her reading skills as well as non-readers, will always find a pathway to life-skills here if they are willing to try. "Ellerbe continued to highlight on the Win/Win program, which is a program offered to those who need to prepare for the Work-Key test, through our Key-Train program. "The Win/Win program also prepares a student for the GED test as well," she added. A six-hour training session, which will train a person in tutoring a non-reader is forthcoming and will later be announced.
