CHERAW - A Cheraw man, Everette Chrishaun Bridges, 29, 84 Campbell Road, was arrested after officers responded to an activated burglar alarm at the Pee Dee ABC Store located at 102 Powe St. around 1 a.m. last Tuesday.
Bridges is allegedly charged with second-degree burglary and also failure to register as a sex offender, according to Cheraw Police Department's Detective David Watson, who assisted in the investigation. "As part of our investigation, we're looking at tying Bridges to a couple of other downtown burglaries as well as a residential break-in," said Watson.
According to the police report, the store alarm had awakened aneighbor, who then called the police. Cheraw Police Department's PFC George Halma, arrived at the scene where he noticed that the east window of the building was broken. A broken glass bottle of liquor was also found on the ground under the window. Halma then alerted other responding units that a burglary had occurred.
CPD's PFC Jerry Lundy, also arrived. The two officers then heard a noise from inside the store. At that time, Halma told the assisting officers that it was possible that someone was still inside the store.
Sgt. Damien Shields, also of the CPD, then contacted an individual with the store key to come and unlock the door so the officers could search the premises. Once inside, the officers discovered the suspect hiding behind the refrigerator in a room behind the cash counter, according to the report. Bridges was then apprehended and taken into custody.
According to the report, approximately $5 in change was missing from the cash register, which had been thrown on the floor. Damage to the window was estimated to be around $150.
Bridges bond was set at $30,000 and he remains in the Chesterfield County Detention Center as of Tuesday morning.
