Free classes designed to help individuals assess their career skills and to explore relevant career pathways at Northeastern Technical College will be offered Oct. 19 – 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the campus in Cheraw in room 212.

Success Skills classes are open to single parents, homemakers and individuals who are interested in nontraditional careers. Single parents must be unmarried, or legally separated from a spouse, and have custody, or joint custody of a minor child. Homemakers must be adults who work, without payment, to care for the home and family.

Participants will receive counseling and information about potential career pathways and the relevant training. They will also have an opportunity to counsel with faculty members and students in career-oriented academic pathways offered by the college.

Individuals interested in nontraditional careers are men or women who are interested in starting a career traditionally held by the opposite sex. For example, women who are interested in becoming a machinist, electrician or drafter or, men who are interested in becoming a nurse, receptionist or accounting clerk are considered nontraditional.

The class is free of charge. Participants who complete these orientation and exploration classes will be encouraged to enter a second phase of the program, which includes enrolling as a student in one of Northeastern Technical College’s business, technology or health and public service academic pathways.

Each participant will receive help in locating tuition assistance. Available assistance may include financial support in areas such as books, childcare, and transportation for qualified students.

Participants must have a high school diploma or GED and attend all four skills classes in order to qualify for assistance through this type of special program. Participants must also bring their 2008 income tax information to class for spring semester financial aid purposes.
