Region Report

ROCK HILL – According to a recent report, U.S. Rep. John Spratt (5th District of S.C.) and other dignitaries will formally kick off the S.C. 2010 Census in Rock Hill, which will also include 11 South Carolina counties during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Rock Hill Local Census Office.

According to Spratt’s office, the Rock Hill office is responsible for all Census 2010 operations within an 11 county area, which includes Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Darlington, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Marlboro, Union and York.

Media Relations Representative, Terry Plumb of the Charlotte Regional Census Center said, “Because the Census Bureau tries to hire people from the area where they will be working, this information should be of interest to many in your audience.”

A recent press release stated that nearly 612,500 positions would be filled for Census 2010 in S.C.

Beginning at 11 a.m., the event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010 during a ribbon cutting ceremony located at 775 Addison Ave., Suite 200, in the Ashton Building, near McAlister’s Deli in Rock Hill.

A reception and office tour is also planned at the end of the program.

Rep. Spratt will deliver keynote remarks and Jeanie Presto, assistant regional census manager, U.S. Census Bureau, also will speak. The Nation Ford High School Marine Corps ROTC will present Colors and Julia Matthews will sing the National Anthem. A woodwind ensemble under the direction of Martin Dickey will perform, and the S.C. Census Quilt, by Aiken artist Jackie Hill, will be on display for viewing.

Presto and local Census Office Manger, Jan Smiley, will be available for interviews following the ceremony.
