New council member, Billy Wallace (District 2) is officially sworn in by Cheraw Town Clerk/Treasurer Clementine Ellis (Tina) during the Jan. 12 Cheraw Town Council meeting. This was the first official council meeting for Wallace and also for newly sworn in Reid McBride (District 6).
CHERAW – The newly elected Cheraw Town Council members took the Oath of Office to serve a four-year term on the Cheraw Town Council during Tuesday night’s Cheraw Town Council meeting.
Billy Wallace (District 2), Reid McBride (District 6) and Jacqueline Ellerbe-Shannon (District 4) were well prepared to be sworn in to serve as council members for the Town of Cheraw.
In addition, the Town’s administrative staff recommended that current Town officials, Clementine A. Ellis/Cheraw Town Clerk/Treasurer, Town Attorney, C. Anthony Harris and Municipal Judge, J.A. Graves, all be reappointed to continue their positions for the Town of Cheraw for 2010.
Council accepted and approved the recommendation as well as assigning Town Council Standing Committees for this year.
Serving on the Finance Committee are Councilman Fred Harris (Chairman), Jacqueline Ellerbe-Shannon and Billy Wallace.
Serving on the Legislative/Personnel Committee are Councilman John Melton (Chairman), Councilman Randy Butler and Councilman Reid McBride.
Other committees may be assigned throughout the year if necessary, according to Council.
Also approved is the annual jury box, which includes names on the official list of qualified electors of the municipality provided by the Chesterfield County Election Commission and is placed on a computerized disk. Jurors are then drawn for municipal court trials based on a special random selection computer program.
Council also agreed to elect a Mayor Pro Tempore to serve in the absence or disability of the mayor.
In other business:
Council also heard and unanimously accepted a recommendation to select the firm of FBI Construction in Florence, S.C. to perform and manage the design/build concept for the Town’s Public Works project.
The Cheraw Town Council has been reviewing the current Town Code and has attempted to update the code to eliminate certain antiquated, out-of-date sections. The ordinance states that the Town Code will contain all of the policies, rules and regulations adopted by Town Council. Council accepted and approved the first reading of an ordinance to amend certain sections of the Cheraw Town Code.
Council approved a marketing proposal from TrueBlue Advertising for the Town of Cheraw.
Cheraw Visitor’s Center/Tourist Director Phil Powell presented Council with a recommendation and a breakdown of the services that would be provided by the local company.
