Galey & Lord, LLC of 670 N. Main St. in Society Hill is sponsoring a project for the month of October, “Care Package for Local Soldiers.”

The company has chosen to take on an opportunity to help local soldiers who are overseas. This action of caring is open to the public as well as to the employees of Galey & Lord, LLC. All items can be dropped off at the front desk with the receptionist, Ms. Faye, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information or to schedule a drop off time contact the company at 843-378-2211. The plan is to have the majority of these items collected and ready by Wednesday, Oct. 24, but collections will continue throughout October.

This is Galey & Lord’s first attempt at this project and it plans to do it at least once a year. The goal is to have a great response from the public and employees, which would allow the company to increase its collecting to more than once a year. Administrative Assistant at Galey & Lord, Sarah Winburn, said that by doing this “we would like to express our love, support, and appreciation to those brave men and women, by sending them care packages that they desperately need … we hope to make a difference in these brave soldier’s lives and we hope to make their days away from home, somewhat easier.”

Galey & Lord has already found 12 soldiers on the website, www.Anysoldier.com, who are based out of South Carolina. These particular soldiers are points of contact for their unit and will pass out the items in each of the care packages. Many of these men and women are in remote locations and don’t get packages very often. Galey & Lord hopes to collect quilts , cards from Sunday school classes, and to ask everyone to contribute by purchasing a few care package items from the list.

Common items requested by soldiers: Multi-tool, folding knife, AA batteries, air activated heat wraps, baby wipes, Beanie Babies (to hand out to local children), bed pillows, beef jerky, blank writable CDs, blue/black pens, body spray, body wash, books, cereal bars/granola bars, chewing gum, coffee, comic books, individual packaged cookies/muffins, crackers, crossword puzzles, word searches, soduku, D size batteries, deck of cards, deodorant, dice, digital/disposable cameras, DVD movies, envelopes, fly paper, foot warmers, Febreeze, hand warmers, hard candy, hot cocoa mix, inflatable seat cushions, jelly beans, juice boxes/drink pouches, macaroni and cheese, magazines, memory sticks, mouthwash, movies, notebooks, nuts, paperback books, phone cards, powdered drinks especially Gatorade, Pringles, Ramen noodles, razors, shoe laces for gym shoes and boots, spices (crushed red pepper), salt, pepper, sun glasses, sunflower seeds, suntan lotion, thumb tacks (to hang the pictures), toothbrushes and toothpaste, travel size games (chess, checkers), travel size packets of laundry detergent, underwear, video games (Nintendo Wii, PlayStation, Xbox), vitamins, Ziploc bags (for keeping things airtight, watertight, and fresher).
