It’s never too early to begin planning for college, which is why Marlboro County School District bused in students from five middle schools to tour Northeastern Technical College’s campus in Cheraw recently.
Seventh and eighth-graders from Wallace, McColl, Clio and Blenheim middle schools, as well as the School of Discovery in Clio, were given guided tours of the college to learn about educational opportunities at NETC.
As the students made their way around campus, they learned how NETC can prepare them for successful careers in electronics, welding, machine tool technology, nursing, computer technology, criminal justice, early childhood, business and administrative office technology.
They got to watch a robotics demonstration in the electronics lab, look at slides under a microscope in the chemistry lab, feel for a “human pulse” in the simulation mannequins in the nursing lab, test their typing skills on key-covered keyboards in a computer lab, watch an instructor teach a class on another campus through distance learning, and tour the library.
They learned how they can begin their college education at NETC and transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree. By first earning an associate degree at NETC, students can save on tuition fees and housing costs during their first two years of college.
The students also learned they can begin taking college courses and earn college credit while in high school through NETC’s Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit programs. Students who dually enroll not only earn college credit, they also gain experience that prepares them for life as a college student.
