Dr. Shawn Maria Johnson, 53, died at her home in Louisville, Ga.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at Macedonia Baptist Church in Cheraw. The interment service followed at Sandhill Cemetery.

Johnson was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on May 2, 1959. She was the daughter of Pearlen McLendon Johnson Alston and the stepdaughter of the late Theodore London Alston Sr. Johnson was also the granddaughter of the late moses and Mary Jane McLendon. She was a 1976 graduate of Cheraw High School. In 1980, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Benedict College in Columbia. She then moved to Louisville, Ga. In late 1998 she received a degree of Doctor of Education from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg.

Dr. Johnson is survived by her mother, Pearlen Johnson Alston, her sister, Dr. Cheryl Ann Johnson, a stepsister, Shelia Alston, two stepbrothers, Theodore Alston Jr. and Michael Alston, two aunts, Rosie Emmanuel of Buffalo, N.Y., and Carrie Young of Hartsville, Maggie Hubbard of Bennettsville, and numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Reid’s Funeral Home of Cheraw served the Johnson family.
