Kindergarten students will be in charge of ceremonies surrounding Cheraw’s celebration of Arbor Day this year, as a tree will be planted at St. David’s School this year to honor Lou Hendley, who has taught classes there since the school began.
The program will begin at 11 a.m. at St. David’s School on the corner of Market and Huger Streets Friday, Dec. 7.
Cheraw has been celebrating Arbor Day for 35 years now, said Scott Laney, grounds and maintenance director for Cheraw Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services. “And we’ve been a Tree City USA for that long as well,” he said.
Not every year is a tree planted on Arbor Day for a specific person, said Laney. However, in 2011, two trees were planted at Riverside Park in honor of the two Town of Cheraw employees, Glenn Locklear and Barney “Sly” Driggers, who were killed in the train accident that summer.
Laney suggests anyone wishing to have a tree planted, in memory or honor of someone, contact the Martha Duvall Tree Foundation which was established in January 1986. Those inquiries may be made at the Recreation Department’s office at 843-537-8420.
