“Nobody asks for bicycles anymore. This year, the boys want transformers, robots or Lego’s. And most of the girls have asked for Barbie dolls or tea sets,” said Mickey Workman, a volunteer for the Cheraw Community through a non-profit organization called Nancy’s Kids.
Workman and his wife, Nancy, have been working to help make Christmas a little brighter for struggling families for more than a decade. “Each year,” he said, “we find more and more families in need.”
And so each year, Workman gathers his list of sizes, and wishes for tea sets or Lego’s, and takes on the task of shopping. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun too.”
This year, Workman has purchased 33 coats, ranging in size from infants to young adults. “We try to get a coat, jeans, shirt or sweater, and a toy for each child,” said Workman.
“We get a lot of help from individuals and from several groups within the community,” said Workman. “We have the Red Hatters, the Catholic Church, teachers from Cheraw Primary, and several local Sunday School classes that play a big part in this effort.”
Theses groups help with everything from identifying families in need, to gathering lists and wrapping gifts. Many of these same volunteers, said Workman, also give monetary support to the program.
“And there’s a lot of wrapping to be done!” said Workman, as the gifts will be distributed to the families Friday, Dec. 21.
