The bridge at the end of State Road in Cheraw that was closed immediately upon routine inspection last month is already scheduled to be repaired, according to Cheraw Mayor Andy Ingram.
“Good news!” Ingram announced last Thursday. “The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Commissioner approved the funding today to replace the bridge on State Road.”
SCDOT plans to begin work as early as April, said Ingram. “We hope it will be complete by July.”
This is especially good news as there is currently a lot of discussion at the state level concerning the high cost of road construction and bridge repair, said Ingram.
South Carolina has traditionally relied on gas taxes to build roads and bridges, but recently Republican legislators have proposed taking as much as $41 million from sale taxes collected on cars and trucks to apply towards roads and bridges. Others, such as Senate Minority Leader Nikki Setzler who claim South Carolina’s infrastructure is in such a bad state of repair, say that $41 million would be “like a raindrop on Lake Murray.”
