A well-known memorial to the victims of the uprising in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square was removed from the University of Hong Kong on Thursday. The university staff announced this.
From pillar of shameDanish artist Jens Galschiot has been at university for 24 years. The eight-meter-high statue shows bodies stacked to commemorate the 1989 massacre in Beijing in Tiananmen Square, also known as Tiananmen Square. The protest against the communist government was brutally ended by the military, resulting in the deaths of an estimated thousands.
The university had decided in October (October) to withdraw the monument. “The decision regarding the ancient statue was made on the basis of external legal advice and an assessment of risks for the benefit of the university,” the statement said.
China influence
Hong Kong has been a semi-autonomous region of China since 1997, but the growing influence of the Beijing regime limits democratic freedoms and crushes the pro-democracy movement.
China bans any commemoration of the 1989 massacre.
