Travolta, an experienced pilot, flew with his family from Florida to Maine to celebrate Thanksgiving in November 1992. During the flight, as he approached the airspace over Washington, all of the plane’s electrical systems, including navigation devices, suddenly failed. “I had two working jet engines, but nothing else — no tools and no electricity,” Travolta recalls.
The actor described how he feared for his life and the life of his family on the plane. “I thought it was over. I said to myself, ‘I can’t believe I’m going to die on this plane.'” Miraculously, Travolta was able to land the plane and eventually recognize the Washington Monument and the adjacent Washington National Airport. Through clear sight he made a safe landing.
The incident inspired Travolta to direct a new short film called The Shepherd, based on the 1978 book. The film tells the story of a military pilot who gets lost while trying to get home for Christmas. Travolta, struck by the similarity to his own experience, plays another pilot in the film who helps bring the missing soldier to safety. “When I read this book, it shocked me even more because I had experienced it myself,” says the actor.
