The Biden government rejects its intention to accept more recognized refugees. The US President had previously announced that the ceiling would be raised to 125,000 annually from October. For now, however, he’s sticking to the historically low cap of 15,000 set by his predecessor Donald Trump.
Sources in Washington said: “The implementation of the resettlement program must be reviewed, in part due to the Corona pandemic and associated restrictions in certain countries.” The president ordered to speed up the acceptance process and raise the ceiling in the future.
Since October, just over 2,000 refugees have been accepted through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. That would normally be 15,000 a year later. Democratic representatives want Biden to keep his word. If necessary, it will be discussed in Parliament to raise the ceiling.
