Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party won the Scottish parliamentary elections by a large margin. The Edinburgh Election Commission announced this on Saturday night. With 64 seats, the Nationalists trailed one seat for an absolute majority.
However, a majority of the new Parliament appears to support a new referendum on the independence of Scotland. The Greens, which also support the referendum, won eight seats in the 129-seat parliament in Edinburgh, according to final polls on Thursday.
In the first referendum in 2014, opponents of independence won the case. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government is refusing to hold a new referendum, but nationalists argue that Brexit has fundamentally changed the situation. In Scotland, the vast majority were against Brexit.
The Scottish Conservatives achieve status quo with 31 seats. Labor Socialists lose two seats to 22 deputies. The Liberal Democrats should give up one seat and get four more. Former Prime Minister Alex Salmond’s Alba party failed to secure a seat.
The rate of participation was 66%, the highest rate since the establishment of Parliament in 1999.
