Case closed. Mark Cavendish will not appear at the start of the Tour de France on June 26. Deceuninck-Quick Step boss Patrick Lefevere announced this to Cyclingnews. “We want to count on Sam Bennett 200 percent.”
Cavendish succeeded in replacing Sam Bennett (who suffered a knee) on the Tour of Belgium. In the fifth stage, the Manx Express sprinted towards victory. It immediately raised the question of whether this Cavendish form shouldn’t have come to the tour.
“The deal was that Bennett would go if he was OK,” Patrick Lefevre now tells us. “Then we won’t go with runners. His knee is better and today he has another long training. Usually he should be fine.”

Cav can also deliver quite a few noblemen’s letters in the round. With 30 stage wins, only Eddie Merckx (34 wins) is the best. However, Lefevre relies on Bennett. “Sam is not the strongest in his head,” he says.
“If all goes well, he’ll get stronger and stronger. Like we saw last year on the Tour. But if Bennett has doubts and we get a second runner like Cavendish at the wheel, he gets nervous.”
