NASA selects SpaceX for its trip to Jupiter and Europa. The US space agency announced this on Friday. The decision is a huge victory for the company of billionaire Elon Musk, which plans to venture further into the solar system.
The Europa Clipper mission was set in October 2024 by a Falcon Heavy rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The contract is worth $178 million. Initially, the task was to select a Space Launch System (SLS) rocket from NASA, but this was delayed and outweighed by the cost.
The orbiter will make 40 to 50 orbits around Europe to see if life is possible on this icy moon. The spacecraft will be equipped with cameras and spectrometers to take high-resolution images. Radar is used to determine if there is liquid water under the ice layer.
