Camila Giorgi (WTA-71) has added the Montreal WTA Championship to her list of honors, which is good for her third singles title in tennis. In the Canadian Championship final, it was a very strong surprise for Czech Karolina Pliskova (WTA-6), the fourth seed, in two sets: 3-6, 5-7.
Giorgi, who eliminated Elise Mertens in Montreal, also played Pliskova against each other in Tokyo in the third round of the Olympics. Until then, the 29-year-old Italian had been the better of two groups. The two know each other through and through.
In the first set, the decision fell on the always important seventh game. Pliskova and Georgi made it wear out, and the Italian eventually won it. Immediately after that, Giorgi again underwent a colleague’s service: she is good for winning 3-6 sets.
Also in the second set it went well until 5-5, after which the decision to send Pliskova fell.
The second match point was good for the Italian, after which she burst into tears. For Georgie, this is her third singles title, her first since 2018, and the best of her career.
