Andrew Cuomo, the governor of the US state of New York, formally filed for retirement on Tuesday. The application comes after his announcement last week of his resignation after an investigation revealed that he had sexually harassed women, especially former employees, for years.
Cuomo, 63, is entitled to a monthly state retirement benefit after serving in a government office for more than a decade. According to the American think tank Empire Center, he qualifies for a benefit of at least $50,000 annually. However, the benefit can still be withdrawn if Cuomo is found guilty of a crime by a judge, the organization says. The retirement system should come into effect on September 1.
The study revealed that Cuomo sexually assaulted 11 women between 2013 and 2020. These included sexual harassment, unwanted and inappropriate groping, kissing, hugging, and comments that the alleged victims described as “extremely degrading, uncomfortable, degrading, and inappropriate.”
Cuomo initially denied any wrongdoing. Last Tuesday, however, he admitted to making mistakes. “But I never meant to disrespect women,” he added.
