A 58-year-old American woman was killed in a shark attack in the Bahamas on Tuesday, police said. The woman was on a cruise with her family and booked a snorkeling trip.

The woman and her family were traveling aboard Harmony of the Seas in Royal Caribbean, and she had docked in New Providence when they signed up for the trip. The tour company took the family to Green Cay, about half a mile northwest of Rose Island.

“The family was diving in an area frequented by divers,” police said. According to the police spokesman, family members witnessed the attack. Together with the staff of the travel organization, they managed to save the victim from the grip of the shark.

However, all the help came too late. The woman was taken to a hospital in mainland New Providence where she was pronounced dead. She sustained injuries to the upper part of her body.

Diving in the popular area was often not without danger. In 2019, a 21-year-old American woman was killed in a shark attack. A month ago, an eight-year-old British boy survived an attack by three sharks in the Bahamas.

Worldwide, 73 shark attacks were reported last year, 9 of which were fatal.
