Of course, developer Naughty Dog makes sure there’s another row of accessibility options in the remake of The Last of Us, and they’re central to the new trailer.
At the 2020 Game Awards, Naughty Dog already won the “Innovation in Accessibility” award, and it looks like the developer is participating again this year. In a new trailer and Blog post Naughty Dog explains how accessibility options work.
“We expect this to be an accessible experience for blind and deaf players, and players who need access to cars,” said game director Matthew Gallant. The “biggest new feature,” he says, comes in the form of audio descriptions for filmmakers. Naughty Dog previously worked with Descriptive Video Works, a company that specializes in integrating descriptions into series, movies, and games. Audio descriptions have been prepared for all languages available in the game.
Another big plus, according to Gallant, is the ability to conduct dialogues through the DualSense controller’s speaker. This gives the player haptic feedback, and the deaf player can “feel how the sentence is being pronounced” and thus feel the dialects, which should give a better picture than just translation.
With so many accessibility options working together, Naughty Dog has created three presets for the player to choose from, and they contain some developer-recommended options. These presets can be modified, if necessary. Read more about it on PlayStation Blog.
Finally, a short trailer has been dropped, comparing the Boston Capitol from The Last of Us Remastered to that of The Last of Us: Part 1. The Last of Us: Part 1 will be released on September 22 for the PlayStation 5.
