Anna van der Bregen on starting out as a team leader: “Only now I realize the amount of work that goes into it” | Cycling

As a contestant, Anna van der Bregenn has won 2 world titles, 4 times in the Giro, 2 times in Liege, the Tour of Flanders and an Olympic gold. She was also very successful as a sports director in her early months, especially thanks to Lotte Kubicki.

“The switch took a while to get used to,” van der Bregen admits. “As a racer, you just have to train well and ensure you can race in good health. It’s that simple. Now you’re doing something completely different.”

The Dutchman retroactively earned extra respect for her former team captains. “In the past, you just got off a plane and a car was waiting for you. Now I have to make sure everything is ready by myself. Now you realize how much work there is.”

“You really have to think about 1,000 things, this was a search for me. Now you’re in charge of an entire team.”

Anna van der Bregen does not want to start her career as a sports director. But she has a score ready for the kobeki lot. “I’ll give it an 8 out of 10. Not higher, because it can still grow.”

“It’s a learning process for her, to see what is still possible. She has grown a lot this year, her confidence but also her qualities on the bike.”
