The Audi Urbansphere was supposed to be presented at the Beijing Motor Show, but this was postponed for the now known reason. while the Sky Ambassador It was an electric driving machine, and Grandsphere A luxury electric limousine, the Urbansphere is specially designed for the Chinese capital, where personal space is limited. It was also designed with input from Chinese users.
The fact that these cities had particularly congested traffic was apparently less important in external dimensions, because the Urbansphere is no less than 5.51 meters long and 2 meters wide. So quickly navigating through traffic was not a priority, although the test car is equipped with rear wheels for steering, it provides more comfort. After all, Audi says it designed the Urbansphere “from the inside out,” as “a lounge on wheels and a mobile office, to serve as a third living space for time spent in traffic.”
The brand from Ingolstadt seems to see baking in a luxurious single-cabin, with comfort and personal space as its greatest assets. The Urbansphere has the most interior space ever in an Audi, thanks to its massive dimensions, but also because of its 3.4-meter wheelbase and because it makes optimal use of the electric platform, with less space devoted to mechanical parts. Access to this interior is ensured by a wide entrance, thanks to the anti-opening doors and the absence of a B-pillar. The funny thing is that when the doors open, the show results in a “red carpet”… VIP access.
Peace and modern luxury
Inside, the Urbansphere offers four independent seats, although in the photos there appears to be a third row of seats. Maybe something for a potential production version? Anyway, the focus is on two rows of seats, with a “first-class” feel: different seat positions that can also rotate towards each other, a kind of privacy screen in the headrests that also makes up their audio area, a transparent OLED screen for multimedia And to protect the front row of passenger seats, the touch-sensitive surfaces to control everything, the water dispenser… you name it. Tension is out of the question, so there is audio analysis to detect stress and set the mood.
Colors and materials should also contribute to the calmness on board: wood, wool, high-touch quality and environmentally responsible synthetic materials… all in soft beige tones and gray that darkens towards the top.
Something about the driver’s job: everything is digitally displayed there and the steering wheel for Level 4 autonomous driving can disappear – without driver intervention.
While there is a lot to be said about the interior, the exterior is less detailed. A monocoque with all the cues of Audi design, including the imposing interpretation of the monocoque nose. To give you an idea of the dimensions: the wheels are at least 24 inches in size! With their dual styling, they should remind you of the Avus concept car from the ’90s, according to Audi.
Audi has paid a lot of attention to lighting, with a nose made up almost entirely of LEDs, the “Audi Light Canvas”, with which the car can give signals to other road users, among other things.
The Audi Urbansphere is similar to the other two “Sphere” concepts on the electric PPE chassis. It has a 120 kWh battery underground, which provides a driving range of 750 km. With an 800V system and a charging capacity of 270 kW, an additional 300 km of driving range can be charged in 10 minutes, or 5 to 80% in less than 25 minutes. Two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear, together provide a power of 295 kW and a torque of 690 Nm. Audi does not release performance figures. An advanced suspension and adaptive air suspension should ensure comfort in all conditions.
