US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill hosted thousands of children in the White House yard on Monday for a traditional Easter egg roll. For the 79-year-old president, it was the first time: Last year, the ‘Easter Egg Roll’ was canceled due to the coronavirus.
Thousands of children were allowed to roll hard-boiled eggs across the lawn in the garden of the US President’s official residence on Monday. They were greeted by Joe Biden and his wife Jill who addressed the children from a balcony surrounded by large Easter bunnies.
The Easter egg roll was first organized by then-President Rutherford Hayes in 1878. The idea is for children to roll painted boiled eggs on the grass with a wooden spoon. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperative on Monday: It was overcast in Washington, D.C. with occasional light rain.
“EGGucation”
This year’s event was all about ‘EGGucation’, a word play with the English words for whites, ‘eggs’, education, and ‘education’. “Education never ends,” said First Lady Jill Biden, herself an English teacher. “We want to honor education design here.”
The south side of the White House yard has been converted into a school of sorts for the occasion, with educational activities for children. Famous American talk show host Jimmy Fallon reads from a children’s book.
